For starters, Manji feels mainstream Islam resists diversity and marginalizes women, which can alienate someone like Manji - a young lesbian of South Asian descent. Irshad Manji is a gadfly, a woman who fervently believes herself to be a good Muslim and also defiantly proclaims that Islam as it manifests today is deeply flawed. ![]() Manji’s book, The Trouble with Islam: A Muslim’s Call for Reform in her Faith, has excited interest and provoked denunciations since its publication in the United States early this year, exactly as the author expected. Martin Luther King, Jr., sent his “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” In the same spirit, a young Muslim woman, Irshad Manji, is telling the world - in a 250-page open letter to her fellow Muslims - that her religion must change. Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of Wittenburg Cathedral. The Open Letter is stock in trade for passionate, high-minded reformers. Tolkien themed cook books, and a very creative ornament handmade by one of our members featuring all of our 2022 book club books. Gifts included a deluxe hot cocoa set, waffle maker with waffle mix, Jane Austen and J.R.R. ![]() We all determined everyone happened to select the perfect gift for herself. With book discussion out of the way, the rest of the evening was dedicated to our two other traditions: Crafts and gifts! During the gift exchange, not a single gift was stolen. We each found different aspects we enjoyed, but the drawings and inserted comments from Polar Bear were aspects we all loved. Tolkien’s daughter-in-law, Baillie Tolkien. As a fairly short book, discussion did not last too long, but everyone enjoyed this unique work compiled by J.R.R. We kicked off the meeting with our usual (and always delicious) dinner of Olive Garden soup, salad and breadsticks, and general chatter about work, family, holiday plans and, of course, books!Įventually discussion turned to our book club selection for this meeting: Letters from Father Christmas. Another of our members attended with her beautiful 1- month old daughter. For the Book Club Belles December Meeting, Molly continued her hosting tradition, only this year it was in her beautiful house! But a new house was not the only thing new about this meeting. ![]() 5/31/2023 0 Comments Family properties by beryl satter![]() ![]() ![]() "'If there's no limit to how much a man can make, and it doesn't matter how he makes it, God help us,'" Satter's grandfather, Isaac, used to say. The narrative-and the author's inspiration-begins at home. If anyone still questions the significance of such organizing in the inner city, she should read Family Properties for a lesson in just how hard a job it is. ![]() Through the lens of history, Satter sheds crucial light on both the current sub prime-mortgage crisis and the importance of community organizing in Chicago. Such is the case with Beryl Satter's Family Properties: Race, Real Estate, and the Exploitation of Black America. It does not give all the answers, and the depth of its practical information is not great, but those who still want to get involved after reading it will find that numerous other books provide advice on grooming, handling, breeding, and raising dogs. ![]() The competition itself is often a source of frustration, and when the whole family gets involved, the stakes are even higher. Newcomers to dog shows are often surprised and finally disillusioned by the dedication required to succeed. With his typical charm, wit, and humor, Caras takes us on a behind-the-scenes tour, starting with early show history, the politics of the show ring, the mechanics of showing, and picking and choosing both a breed and that all-important puppy. Aside from someone who has bred, raised, and shown dogs for decades, who other than CarasD"The Voice of Westminster," the hugely successful kennel club dog show held at Madison Square Garden each FebruaryDcould provide such an insightful look into the world of dog shows. ![]() |
